Race and Adoption: A Panel Discussion – LIVE WEBINAR

Many families either have adopted a child or are considering adopting a child of another race, culture, and/or ethnicity. When taking into account the role of race in our society, this invariably raises questions and concerns. Many adoptive families begin this journey without the benefit of having had an opportunity to hear individuals (adult adoptees and adoptive parents) talk about their experience with trans-racial adoption. Panelists will share individual insights and experiences and respond to questions from the audience. Particular attention will be focused on assisting with understanding the kinds of cross-cultural issues that sometimes arise in these kinds of adoptions and things that parents can do to support their children to form a positive self-identity.
Our moderator, Jeremy Hays has volunteered with ACI for 5yrs. Mr. Hays identifies as biracial adult adoptee that grew up in a transracial household. He is also a member of the LBGTQ+ community. His personal experience and knowledge ranges from being an adopted child to reuniting with his biological family and becoming an adoptive father himself. His perspective challenges the conventional concept of family and speaks to the progressive mindset it now takes to embark on exploring the subjects within adoption as a construct and personal journey.
