SUMMARY:Attachment and Adoption - LIVE WEBINAR
DESCRIPTION:Recent research in neuroscience has confirmed what many clinicians have long known: Early relationships between caregivers and infants/young children matter and have lifelong implications for children. In order to help each child reach their potential\, supportive and caring relationships are essential. This lecture will address the process of creating lasting attachments with adoptive children\, some challenges to the process\, and guidance and tips to overcome difficulties. Elizabeth Stoltenberg\, licensed clinical social worker\, will address unique attachment issues for adoptive families including families that adopt toddlers and older children with difficult early experiences. Elizabeth has provided clinical services to children and their families in both outpatient and inpatient settings since 2016 with a focus on treatment for issues such child and family trauma\, challenging behaviors\, anxiety\, and childhood depression. She currently sees children\, families\, and adult individuals in private practice. Elizabeth holds a master’s degree in child development and has specialized training in early childhood brain development\, play therapy\, attachment\, and DIR/Floortime. This lecture is appropriate for prospective adoptive parents and adoptive parents seeking developmental guidance and insight into nurturing positive and growth-promoting relationships with their children. \n  \nREGISTER HERE\n \n  \nFree for ACI Families/Alumni \n$30 for Non-ACI families \nPayment for Non-ACI families can be made by calling ACI during business hours: 773.334.2300

SUMMARY:Birth Parent Panel Discussion - LIVE WEBINAR
DESCRIPTION:This is a moderated panel discussion.  The panel is comprised of birth parents that have placed children for adoption.  Panelists will discuss their personal experience with adoption and address topics that they consider important and that are raised by the moderator.  Audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions.  They will be asked to examine already existing beliefs about what birth parents are thinking when initially considering placing a child for adoption – and what they think and feel before\, during and following placement.  Other topics to be addressed are relationships with adoptive parents as well as thoughts about and opportunities for communication between birth parents and adoptive families. \nKendall Schwartz\, Class Moderator – For 12+ years I have been part of ACI as a volunteer on the Birth Parent Panel Class as a panelist and 6 years ago I had the pleasure of stepping into the role as the Class Moderator. I placed my son 18 years ago and have a semi-open adoption; I find it healing to have a platform for myself and other birthparents to share their story\, perspective\, and insight. \n  \nREGISTER HERE \n  \nFree for ACI Families/Alumni \n$30 for Non-ACI families \nPayment for Non-ACI families can be made by calling ACI during business hours: 773.334.2300

SUMMARY:Race and Adoption: A Panel Discussion - LIVE WEBINAR
DESCRIPTION:Many families either have adopted a child or are considering adopting a child of another race\, culture\, and/or ethnicity. When taking into account the role of race in our society\, this invariably raises questions and concerns. Many adoptive families begin this journey without the benefit of having had an opportunity to hear individuals (adult adoptees and adoptive parents) talk about their experience with trans-racial adoption. Panelists will share individual insights and experiences and respond to questions from the audience. Particular attention will be focused on assisting with understanding the kinds of cross-cultural issues that sometimes arise in these kinds of adoptions and things that parents can do to support their children to form a positive self-identity. \nOur moderator\, Jeremy Hays has volunteered with ACI for 5yrs. Mr. Hays identifies as biracial adult adoptee that grew up in a transracial household. He is also a member of the LBGTQ+ community. His personal experience and knowledge ranges from being an adopted child to reuniting with his biological family and becoming an adoptive father himself. His perspective challenges the conventional concept of family and speaks to the progressive mindset it now takes to embark on exploring the subjects within adoption as a construct and personal journey. \nREGISTER HERE \n  \nFree for ACI Families/Alumni \n$30 for Non-ACI families \nPayment for Non-ACI families can be made by calling ACI during business hours: 773.334.2300

SUMMARY:Prenatal Drug and Alcohol Exposure: What Prospective Parents Need to Know - LIVE WEBINAR
DESCRIPTION:Some children who are placed for adoption were prenatally exposed to drugs and/or alcohol. While this may alarm prospective parents\, increased awareness can be helpful. This class will teach prospective parents about the effects of prenatal drug and alcohol exposure\, explore what related symptoms can look like over time\, and outline available services for children and families who need them. This can help prospective parents make decisions\, gain a frame of reference for potential concerns\, and ultimately maximize their child’s potential. It is presented by Corinne Fleming\, Psy.D.\, a licensed clinical psychologist at Children’s Research Triangle\, which is a nonprofit organization in Chicago that specializes in evaluation and treatment of children with prenatal substance exposure\, as well as those who have experienced trauma.

\n  \nREGISTER HERE \n  \nFree for ACI Families/Alumni \n$30 for Non-ACI families \nPayment for Non-ACI families can be made by calling ACI during business hours: 773.334.2300 \n

SUMMARY:Adult Adoptee Panel Discussion: Adoptees Share Their Experiences - LIVE WEBINAR
DESCRIPTION:Adult Adoptee Panel Discussion: Adoptees Share Their Experiences \nWhat does adoption look like through the lens of someone who was adopted?  How does someone who was adopted suggest talking to children about adoption?  This class is conducted with a panel of adults who were adopted as children.  The panelists discuss their lives\, the history of their memories about adoption; when they were told\, how they were told\, and what they thought and felt about being adopted.  Usually\, the panel consists of individuals who were adopted domestically (and from time to time we will have a panelist who was adopted overseas).  The moderator\, Jeremy Hays\, will pose specific questions and assist in bringing to the fore salient aspects of the panelist’s experience.  This session is most appropriate for potential adoptive parents and adoptive parents of infants and young children. \nOur moderator\, Jeremy Hays has volunteered with ACI for 5yrs. Mr. Hays identifies as biracial adult adoptee that grew up in a transracial household. He is also a member of the LBGTQ+ community.
Dr. Laura Brock Fraint\, clinical psychologist\, will address unique attachment issues for adoptive families including families that adopt toddlers and older children with difficult early experiences. Dr. Fraint has provided clinical services to children and families since 2007\, with a focus on early childhood assessment and treatment for issues such as ADHD\, disruptive behavior\, child and family trauma\, anxiety\, and childhood depression. At Erikson’s Center for Children and Families\, Dr. Fraint provides developmental\, psycho-educational\, and psychological evaluations and counseling services. This lecture is appropriate for prospective adoptive parents and adoptive parents seeking developmental guidance and insight into nurturing positive and growth-promoting relationships with their children. \n  \nREGISTER HERE\n \n  \nFree for ACI Families/Alumni \n$30 for Non-ACI families \nPayment for Non-ACI families can be made by calling ACI during business hours: 773.334.2300 \n

SUMMARY:Understanding Domestic Adoption: From Matched to Possible Placement - LIVE WEBINAR
DESCRIPTION:The time leading up to the birth of a child and the days following the birth are frequently among the most challenging periods for everyone in the adoption process. Some adoptive parents manage to breeze through this period while others are presented with challenges. This presentation focuses on the variables that affect the different experiences that people have. This presentation is valuable for anyone hoping to adopt a child domestically\, whether or not they are adopting for the first time. We will review the information about birth parent rights\, how potential birth parents may feel after birth\, and the “do’s and don’ts” for prospective adoptive parents.  Participants will leave the presentation with increased clarity about their role in the process during this critical time and have a better sense of what is and is not possible.    NOTE: This class will focus only on Illinois laws. \n\nSome topics of discussion will include: \n\nWhat happens when it is discovered that a child has been exposed to drugs or alcohol?\nWhat happens when a birth mother decides to have her child stay in her room after birth?\nWhat do and don’t most hospitals allow?\nWhat happens between the time when a child is born and the time a birth mother can sign final and irrevocable surrenders for adoption?\nWhat can adoptive parents do or say to help a situation or hinder it?\nWhat are the risks to potential adoptive parents of providing temporary care?\nHow long after giving birth does it take for a birth mother to sign surrenders?\nWhat happens if a birth father does not cooperate and chooses not to support an adoption plan?\n\n  \nREGISTER HERE\n  \nFree for ACI Families/Alumni \n$30 for Non-ACI families \nPayment for Non-ACI families can be made by calling ACI during business hours: 773.334.2300
